Being a mother is one of the most rewarding jobs on the planet, but it can also be one of the most stressful. When stress is taking its toll, what you need is a killer self-care regime to look after your health! As a parent, it’s unlikely that you’ll have lots of free time, but not to worry, these self-care tips are easy to squeeze into your busy days.

1 . Micro-self care moments

Mums know that self-care is important, but the problem is fitting self-care into a busy lifestyle. The good news is you don’t need lots of time to fit in a micro-self care moment. (These are basically fast self-care practices)! Here are a few examples to get you started:

  • Write three lines in a journal: Journaling is a therapeutic act which can help you to unwind and express your feelings. You might not have time to write a full journal entry, so why not try writing just three lines a day? It could be anything, including an expression of gratitude, a goal, something you like about yourself, poetry, or a difficult emotion.
  • Dance for five minutes: Exercise is such an important part of any self-care regime, but many of us don’t have the time to work out daily. Set aside just five minutes to dance to your favorite music; you’ll get the endorphins pumping, boost your energy and have fun!
  • Meditate for ten minutes: Meditation allows us to feel relaxed, unwind, and practice mindfulness. Try using an app such as Headspace or Buddhify; there are plenty of short guided meditations to choose from here. A daily meditation practice is one of the best ways to de-stress.

2. Health supplements

When you’re feeling stressed out, there are plenty of health supplements out there which can help you to feel calmer and more relaxed. Try plant-based capsules like chamomile, valerian root or passionflower, all of these herbs have anti-anxiety properties and help to promote a better night sleep. Another highly effective herbal supplement is CBD or cannabidiol; it’s a compound which is extracted from marajuana plants and produces a relaxing effect. You can purchase CBD in capsule form or try a tested brand of gummies. CBD gummy sweets come in many delicious flavours (and are just what you need after a long hard day)!

3. Kid-free fun days

Sometimes, what you need is a fun day without the kids! Whether it’s a spa day or drinks with a friend, allow yourself some me-time at every once in a while. Taking space for yourself is important to maintain your mental health and prioritize your own needs. It’s not about being selfish; it’s about valuing your own wellbeing as well as that of your children.

4. Try a goal-setting app

When you’re pushed for time, it can feel a little overwhelming to prioritize everything that you need to do. To take the pressure of it can be useful to try a goal-setting app. One great option is ‘Way Of Life’, the app allows you to track your habits, and work on personal development. Whether it’s eating healthier, improving your sleep or taking up a new hobby, ‘Way Of Life’ can support you to make positive changes.

5. Book a massage

When you’re feeling tense, getting a massage is an excellent way to unwind and boost your spirits. Massages help to lower the levels of cortisol in our bodies; this is the hormone which is responsible for making us feel stressed out. Other advantages of massage therapy include increasing mobility and improving circulation.

6. Quick recipe challenge

Learning how to cook new and healthy dishes is an excellent self-care practice. When you’re pushed for time, you’ll want quick-recipes that you can make with minimal effort. For a few quick and healthy recipes, try using the following recipe books:

  • Skinny 15 Minute Meals Recipe Book by CookNation: This book is packed with nutritious and tasty meals that you can make in 15 minutes or less. If you’re looking to improve your health and spend less time in the kitchen, this book is just what you need.
  • Jamie’s 15 Minute Meals: British TV chef Jamie Oliver has plenty of amazing 15 minute meals to share with you. Cuisines from across the globe inspire these meals; you're bound to learn plenty of new dishes and have fun.

Learning new recipes is a fun and wholesome activity which also allows you to develop your cooking skills and learn more about nutrition.
