How to have your very own spa day at home

Let’s be honest. There’s nothing we’d like more than to cleanse, steam and scrub our troubles and worries away by spending an afternoon being pampered at a spa. Whether you’re a busy mum, your job is unrelenting, or you’ve been burning the candle at both ends, there’s very little a pampering session cannot fix. Whether it’s a full body treatment, a massage on those tense and knotted muscles or a cleansing facial a spa has something for every skin issue and every pair of tired eyes. But sadly, a weekend retreat or an afternoon escape is something that many of our budgets simply cannot stretch to. But did you know that with a little imagination and a little know how, you can create your very own spa day at home? Don’t believe me? Read on for a little inspiration.

Set the mood

When was the last time you saw a rubber duck in the spa? Creating a spa experience at home means clearing away all the regular bathroom culprits. So that’s your partners razor, the kids bath toys, and all those product bottles. Try to keep your spa area clear, and minimal. If you’re not using the bathroom, then don’t worry – the same rule applies.

Next, fill the room with a gorgeous fresh scent. You could burn your favourite scented candle or a new oil diffuser. Lemon, lavender, jasmine, rosemary and even peppermint are natural fragrances with relaxing properties.

Aim for low, warm hues of light. So forget that big light in the middle of the room. Keep the light low and subtle. Candles and even fairy lights will help set the mood for you. You could even download some spa music.

Masks

There are so many ways you can pamper and refresh your skin. Face masks are an obvious choice – you can make one at home or get one on the high street. And don’t forget to pamper your hair too! You can treat your dry hair to an inexpensive hair mask using honey and avocado. Check out some recipes online.

Refresh your eyes

You’re not limited to a slice of cucumber on each eye, you know! A warm compress on tired eyes will give then an instant lift. You could even cool some camomile teabags and place them over your eyes for ten minutes. Slices of potato work too!

A steam facial

Cleansing your pores and getting rid of all those nasties is perfectly achievable at home. Fill a bowl with hot water – be careful here – add a few drops of essential oils, like tea tree or rose oil, place a towel over your head and lean over the steam in the bowl. Just do this for a few minutes and follow this with a good moisturiser or clay mask.

Treat your feet

We often neglect our feet! So give them a treat too, with a refreshing foot mask. Mix up some oats, corn meal and sea salt, olive oil, aloe vera and some peppermint oil. Massage your feet and then wash it off. Gorgeous!
