Explore More and Spend Less: Top Money Saving Tips for Travelers

Having a chance to get out and see the world is one of life’s great pleasures. You can have new experiences and meet new people and really see your overall view of the world change for the better. Even if you have a limited budget, you can still find cool places to get away for a few days.

If you are on a budget, however, you need to make sure that you keep track of all of your spending so you can have the best time possible, no matter where you travel. Over the years (and through almost going bankrupt as you can read here!) I have learnt many tricks for staying on budget that I thought I'd share with you.

Watch the Little Things

When you only have so much money to spend, you need to watch everything that you buy, especially while you’re away. This means that you may want to skimp on some items to save money for bigger and better things.

Rather than buying five dollar coffees while you're traveling, look for cheaper coffee: they both get the job done and, if you drink several cups a day and your friends or family do as well, those savings will add up quickly. You can also book hotel rooms that are cheaper, too. Hopefully, you will only be using your rooms to sleep and change, so does it really matter if you have small, two-bed space rather than a suite?

When you travel, it’s difficult to resist the urge to purchase whatever you want: avoid falling for this temptation. Splurging on unexpected items is a sure way to dig into your funds and you may lose out on something better down the road.

Use the Right Credit Card

A lot of travelers prefer to use credit cards on their journeys, which is a great idea: it’s safer than carrying cash and you can still pay the bill before it accrues interest.

If you want to use plastic on your travels, make sure to use a secured card, like these at SecuredCredit.Cards. This will give you an extra ‘added layer' of security that will give you peace of mind when you're away from home so you can enjoy your vacation. If you don’t think you can pay the bill off as soon as you return home, make sure to get a low-interest rate.

The Sharing Economy

The “sharing economy” has grown in popularity over the last few years and gives you an opportunity to save money while you travel.

Companies like Uber and Airbnb are great ways to save money in other towns and cities. Rideshares are often less expensive than taxis, and you can usually find competitive rates on Airbnb that will make it worth your while to explore. This will free up some extra money so you can enjoy more activities.

So in summary, just because you’re on a budget doesn't mean you can't travel: remember these tips and save some money next time you leave for a fun vacation!
