Getting Off The Grid: Great Ideas For An Independent Trip

Being able to travel is one of the greatest privileges available to us. It allows you expand your understanding of the world; you're able to connect with people and places that you might never have even known about, and it can even help you get to know yourself a little better. However, for a lot of people, their experience of travel has been limited some pretty rigid styles of vacation. Now, there's nothing wrong with taking a vacation where you do things to a strict schedule, or you stick to doing just a few things over and over, but if you're looking for something with a little more variety then don't despair, there are things that you can do. With that in mind, here are just a few ideas for how you can get off the grid and take a slightly more independent trip next time you go travelling.

Get your own transport

One of the biggest issues that a lot of people have when they go travelling is that they feel kind of stuck because they have no way to get around outside of the methods dictated by the kind of trip that they've taken. After all, sure, you might have flights booked to get to your destination and to get home again, but how are you going to get around otherwise? If you're taking some kind of incredibly regimented and schedules vacation, then you may have a coach that will pick you up at certain times. Otherwise, it's all too easy to end up with no real idea how you're going to get around. That's why it's such a good idea to your method of transport that you can use whenever you like. If you're taking a road trip, then that's going to be easy but if you're heading overseas then going to somewhere like Euro Car to hire a car that you can then drive yourself around in for your whole trip can be a fantastic option. That way, whenever you feel the urge to get out into the world, there's nothing stopping you.

Head into the wilderness

Of course, no matter what kind of trip you're taking, if you're spending all of your time in cities and towns, then you're going to end up having at least some of your time dictated by those around you. For one thing, hotels or hostels will often have curfews for travellers which is going to be an issue if you want to explore the nightlife or just spend as much time out in the world as possible. If you want total freedom over where you go and what you do, the best thing that you can do is to get out there into the wilderness for a while. Now, this is certainly not going to be everyone's idea of a perfect trip, but if it's the right kind of vacation for you, there really is nothing quite like being able to head out into the wilderness and escape from all of the noise and stress of civilisation for a while. You don't even have to go that far to do it; the reality is that there's plenty of wilderness right on your doorstep if you're willing to take the time to look for it.

Leave your gadgets behind

In the modern world, we're all more connected than any other time in history, and that can be truly fantastic! But the truth is that it can also be kind of exhausting as well. Being constantly connected to the world through things like social media and even the ability to text anyone and everyone you know all at once, can often be overwhelming, to say the least. That's why it's such a great idea, the next time you go travelling, to leave your gadgets behind. You might find yourself wondering how you're ever going to survive without your smartphone, but after a couple of days, you'll more than likely have completely forgotten about it. Of course, a lot of people would be worried that being completely off the grid would mean that no one could get in touch with them if something bad happened. If that's something that you're worried about, then one thing that you can do is to get a cheap phone with a pre-paid sim card on it. That way you have a way you to contact people and for them to contact you in an emergency, but you're not going to be tempted to spend every moment of your trip refreshing Twitter.

Don't plan for anything

Another great way to have more freedom when you're travelling is to avoid planning too much. Most of the time people assume that you have to plan if you want the perfect trip and that's true, but it also closes you off from the possibility of some wonderful and unexpected things that can happen when you throw caution to the wind and embrace the unknown. Why not arrive at the airport and just get on the next available flight, no matter where it's going? Or perhaps you don't bother booking accommodation when you go away somewhere so that you can find the perfect place to stay once you arrive. There are always risks that things aren't going to work out when you take this kind of trip. But it's that unexpected element that makes that kind of travel so exciting

Again, please don't take any of this to mean that one kind of trip is somehow better than others. The reality is that different kinds of people prefer travelling in different ways and the last thing you want is to feel as though the kind of trip that you want to take isn't really available. The truth is that as long as you make an effort to look for it, just about every different kind of trip is out there for you to experience. That's especially good if you're the kind of person who travels a lot and what's to keep a sense of excitement and the unexpected whenever you take a trip.
